Fire Lover: A True Story
By Joseph Wambaugh
Hardcover, 336 pages.

Reader contribution

This book is a must-read for Trenton Police Department arson investigators or the other officers who must deal with psychopaths. This non-fiction work deals with a serial arsonist operating in southern California in the 1980s and 90s. The book describes how someone of high rank uses his stature to commit crimes; it is both shocking and frightening. The book tells the story of Fire Captain/Arson Investigator John Orr who became an arsonist and murderer.
Wambaugh describes the psychiatrist’s view of the classic psychopathic personality this way, “…generally employed and often vain about his appearance. He might project an image of authority, even cocksure competence in his other life, but hi personal life was dismal. There were no monogamous relationships among those they’d studied… (Psychopaths are) conscienceless, egocentric, manipulative, cunning and indifferent to societal rules and restrictions, with a compulsive need for excitement.
Later in the book a psychiatrist testified at John Orr’s trial about his psychopathic personality saying, “One could find arguments for a diagnosis or psychopathy… starting with admitted impulsiveness, a need for excitement, a manipulation of partnerships. His multiple marriages suggested shallow emotions and an inability to love and empathize. There was a certain grandiosity and egocentricity which could be documented.”
Trenton officers should keep these insights in mind should they come into contact with anyone fitting this description.
Wambaugh, a former Detective Sergeant with the LAPD, has written many best selling books, both fiction and non-fiction. Joseph Wambaugh has won the Edgar Allan Poe award
In our next issue we will review Tom Clancy’s new novel, The Teeth of the Tiger. (Putnam books) Here is a brief excerpt: “People in senior positions like to make policy in accordance with their own version of right and wrong. That’s called ego. Problem is, everyone has a different version of right and wrong. Some of them can be downright crazy

The featured speaker, WBUD radio host John Webber made mention of the K9News-Revival and indicated that he enjoyed it. Many of the attendees at the dinner also expressed their appreciation for the unfiltered truth of the K9News-Revival.
Mr. Webber said it best when he complimented the Trenton Police Department as the finest around, from the youngest rookie all the way up to the Deputy Chiefs. John, we couldn't agree more!
