An Ode On A Rake
A libertine of a thing
holds many leaves in his teeth.
He has found his way to the Apple Tree
where the fruit falls heavy.
The apples have fermented
underneath your nose
And their sweet liquor
has made you seedy and verbose.
But rest time is over
and there is no more time for play
As you rush to and fro
to clean up the mess of the day.
The master comes
and whisks you away...

After much exposure
to snow, sun, wind and rain.
Your head is filled
with times gone by.
Like times when you raked out to make
dissolute passes over supple flowers.
And the times you scratched the ground
seeking trimmed and dry grass.
But now your teeth are gnarled and old -
Soon you will be run over with putrid
patina as you are left to grow cold.

A fleeting thought thinks
a good raking over the coals may set
him straight.
But nothing can be done
to make this metal a reformed rake.
